Neighborhood Picnic
The PBCA neighborhood picnic is set for Saturday, September 13th from 3-10 pm. In addition to food, fun, music, games and meeting your neighbors, the PBCA has rented a moonwalk for the kids to bounce on while the parents socialize. Win prizes in raffles and a white elephant gift exchange. The Civic Association will provide burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, fixings and drinks. Each family should bring a pot-luck dish, so start planning now for that special recipe to wow your neighbors. See the enclosed flyer for full details. There is a small fee to help cover expenses. Penn State is playing at Syracuse on the 13th. Since the game will be on ABC, we will have a TV at the Pavilion for those hardcore fans. PLEASE VOLUNTEER TO HELP!!! It really doesn’t take much of your time and you’re going to be there anyway…..so please help. Right now we need someone to organize the grills and organize the kid’s activities. We also need folks to help set up, sign-in folks, take care of the Moonwalk, cook food, buy ice, and many other jobs. Please contact David Fish at 737-6635 to volunteer. Calendar

Web Site
http://www.pinebrookcivicassociation.org Water Pressure Increase
The Pennsylvania-American Water is still in the process of increasing the water pressure on the entire system. So far in Pine Brook, four residents have reported leaks in toilets and sinks since the change in pressure. A water main on Candlelight Drive broke as well. It might be a good idea to check your water lines and fixtures for leaks. Make sure you know where the main water cutoff is in your house and that you have access to it. If you are leaving for the weekend, you may want to consider turning off water hookups or even the main water supply…if possible. Some residents have installed water pressure reducing valves to their systems. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of wet carpet or ruined drywall. SUBMIT YOUR NEWS-BITS
Do you have news or birth announcements to make in the neighborhood? Or do you have a unique service you would like other neighbors to know about? To be included in the Pine Brook News, submit to:
Dave Fish, 405 Lamp Post Lane, Camp Hill, PA 17011 E-mail: PBCAmail@yahoo.com Or join the Pine Brook discussion group on the web site: http://www.pinebrookcivicassociation.org Bits and Pieces
Pet Peeves
Some residents would like to remind everyone that the Township does have “pooper-scooper” laws and you must clean up after your pets. This includes the common areas of the neighborhood such as Hidden Park and Pavilion Park. Not picking up after your pets is a violation of Township laws and the penalty for not picking up after your dog is a fine of no more than $600 and/or jail time of no more than 30 days. Advertising in the Pine Brook News
Ads for kids offering yard work or babysitting jobs, will be listed here FREE of charge. The PBCA also allows interested adults or businesses to advertise in the neighborhood newsletter for a small charge. The cost is $25 for a business card size ad. All money from these ads goes towards the cost of printing the newsletter. The board limits the number of ads and approves the content. If you are interested, please contact Dave Fish at PBCAmail@yahoo.com or 737-6635. Pine Brook Entertainment Committee
The Association is in desperate need of volunteers for the Entertainment Committee which is in charge of organizing and running the various events such as the Summer Picnic, Pumpkin Carving, etc. Please contact Dave Fish at 737-6635 to help - even if it is for only one event.
Ads in the newsletter cost $25 per business card size. This money is used to cover the costs of printing the newsletter.
Pine Brook Cub Scouts
If your son is in 1st through 5th grade, Cub Scout Pack 196 is looking for new members. Pack 196 is the one affiliated with Sporting Hill Elementary and by joining this pack, your son will be with his classmates from school and friends from Pine Brook. The pack meets once a month in the cafeteria at Sporting Hill. Details on joining Pack 196 will be coming home with the students in their folders once school starts. Or call 737-6635 right now. THANK YOU
To all those who supported our "pet-supply" drive. It was a huge success. We donated 330 pounds of food to the Central PA Food Bank, 1,100 pounds of supplies to the Humane Society, and we were able to make a donation to the Helen Krause no-kill shelter as well. All three organizations were very pleased and send along their “Thanks” to our wonderful neighborhood. With each of us doing a little, we were able to make a big difference. PBCA 2009 Board

President’s Corner:
We're a couple of months from the next Pine Brook Civic Association Annual Meeting, and I'll be stepping down as President and Jacquie Kirby Hensel will be the new President. I'll still be on the Board as Past President, but it's time for somebody new to be President and Jacquie will do a great job.
Over the past four years I've thought about this association quite a bit, where we've come from and where we are today. When Fred Briggs became President, the PBCA was restructured with updated by-laws so that it could operate effectively and grow for the future. That is just what has happened. Fred did a spectacular job in his first two years in guiding our civic association into a position where it is today. The past four years, I've benefited from that guidance and we've been able to do quite a few improvements, build a rainy day fund to try to protect the association from extreme surprise expenses helped to build both our membership and helped to create "community" in Pine Brook with various events. Things like the email discussion group, the summer picnic and ALL the other events that Dave Fish and others help to plan and coordinate, the gardening efforts at the front entrance - all have done a lot with a little to increase enjoyment and benefit to all residents of the neighborhood, whether or not they are members of the PBCA. All this happens because of a strong current of volunteerism that ripples throughout the neighborhood. Volunteers make the PBCA work. Volunteers make up the board, the Block Captains, the activity development, the planning for park improvements and many other projects. The amount of time spent by each volunteer varies based on how much is available for them to provide and what they want to volunteer for. The aggregate of that time given is what allows PBCA to do what it does. Let me take this moment to thank everyone that has volunteered time for PBCA - and by extension - the Pine Brook neighborhood at large.
If you helped on mulch day or trimmed branches from a tree or delivered newsletters or anything else that was a gift of time to this neighborhood, I thank you and I hope you feel that the neighborhood thanks you as well. Of course, I also think that you serve as an example for more of the same from others who want to give time. The PBCA needs volunteers. Because we're a volunteer organization, we don't always even know what we need volunteers for. We need ideas, expertise, effort and follow-through. That takes a lot of volunteers and the more volunteers we have, the more ideas and expertise and effort and follow-through we'll have. In fact, one of the areas we probably need help with as far as expertise is concerned is how to create a more enriching volunteer process for the PBCA. Ideas about this, or any other item, are welcome. You can share them with any member of the board or email at info@pinebrookcivicassociation.org I'd like to learn more on how we can improve ourselves with the volunteer spirit of our neighborhood. If you want to help, let us know. The neighborhood, through the PBCA, needs your assistance and your ideas. That's what will make the PBCA an even more effective organization in the future.

School Supplies Needed
Some Pine Brook residents are currently holding a school supply drive to benefit the “Stop the Violence Foundation” in the Allison Hill area of Harrisburg. Reverend Harvey is in need of book bags, pencils, note books and other school supplies, as well as sneakers and shoes. Gift cards are great for Wal-Mart, Payless, or Giant (for supplies for the picnic they have when they distribute the book bags filled with school supplies). If we all do a little together we can do a lot to help this wonderful organization. If you would like to donate, contact: Stephanie Lepley, 309 Lamp Post Ln., 574-1824 or Donna Ulrich, 322 Lamp Post Ln., 329-1861 or Reverend Harvey at 236-2444. Feel free to drop off supplies as well at Stephanie or Donna’s houses. The deadline for donations is August 18th. Annual Meeting
The Pine Brook Civic Association Annual Meeting will take place at 7 pm on Monday, October 6th at Pavilion Park. The PBCA board, President and Vice-president will be elected. If you wish to have yourself considered for any of the positions on the Board of Directors, please contact any board member to have your name placed on the ballot. Please attend this meeting to discuss any matter that is of importance to our neighborhood. Pine Brook Fall Yard Sale
Back by popular demand, the Pine Brook Fall Neighborhood Yard Sale will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 17 & 18. Sell on both days or only on one. You do not need a permit to hold a garage sale. All you have to do is set up a table and start selling. The association will advertise the sale in the newspaper. Here is your chance to sell your “treasures” before you take them to the thrift store or put them on the curb. Tuesdays At Pavilion Park
Due to overwhelming response, the newest Pine Brook ‘tradition’ will continue through the summer. Starting at 6pm, bring your family for a very informal gathering of Pine Brook residents. Pack a dinner and take advantage of the picnic tables. Or just show up for fun and conversation. The kids will get to run around for a few hours with their neighborhood friends while the adults can relax and enjoy a beverage of their own choice. All residents and their friends can attend. See you there. Summer Picnic Planning
The PBCA Summer Picnic is fast approaching. This event can become the premiere event of the neighborhood, but your help is requested. Volunteers are needed. Very little time is involved and you will be in complete charge of your task. I need folks to help with: organizing grills, getting ice chests and ice, help with setting up, staffing the Moonwalk, organizing kid’s games and cleaning up. Please help. Please give Dave Fish a call at 737-6635. Thanks in advance. Neighborhood Directory
The Pine Brook Civic Association Board has made a change concerning future neighborhood directories. Directories used to go to all residents whether they paid their dues or not. From now on, you must be a full paying member of the association to receive a neighborhood directory. Nonmembers can purchase the Directory for $50. The deadline for your $50 annual dues was April 1st. So far, 63% of the neighborhood has paid their fair share. If you have not yet sent in your calendar year payment, please make your check payable to “PBCA” and mail or deliver it to Mr. Ken Ulrich, PBCA Treasurer, 322 Lamp Post Ln., Camp Hill, 17011. Why Didn’t I Get A Directory?
If you did not get a Pine Brook Neighborhood Directory, don’t worry…. it could be for one of the following reasons: 1. You haven’t paid your annual dues of $50. (Only 96 cents a week!) This money is used to maintain the common areas and run the civic association. Please send or deliver your check, made payable to PBCA, to Ken Ulrich, Treasurer, 322 Lamp Post Ln. Camp Hill, PA 17011 2. You have paid your dues, but the PBCA Secretary got notice too late for this delivery. If so, please give David Fish a call at 737-6635.
3. Somebody made a mistake. The Block Captains delivering the directories, the Secretary maintaining the database and the Treasurer are human and make mistakes. Give us a call and we can fix it. |
